Ukraine.Terethewealthytycoonscontroloneanotherandcompetewitheach
other.TelatestprotestsinHongKonghavealsooligarchyinthecontextasthey
weredrivenbythecollapseofthemiddleclass.
Temechanismsoftheoligarchy’sgrowingstrengtharesimilareverywhere.

Afterthreedecadesofthebelleépoquewesternsocietiesseemtohavebecome
somewhatboredwiththecalmlifewhereinternationallawdecidesoneverything
andbordersareupermanently”demarked.Tisboredomisaccompaniedbyuncer-
tainty,alackofbelonging,fearofclimatechangeandrefugees.Alltheseemotions
arefurtheremphasisedbythepopulists.Possiblyoneofthestrangestreactionsto
thebelleépoque,andasignindicatingitsend,isthenostalgiafortheoldimperial
order,onethatwasbuiltbystrongstatesthatwereabletodemandthesubordina-
tionofotherstatesbasedontheirmeansofimpact:political,militaryoreconomic,
butneverinaccordancewithinternationalagreements.Teirrolewastoprovide
