amountforaRussianpolitician.Heopened80headquartersacrossthecountryand
organisedaseriesofprotestralliesthatwereattendedinMarchandJune2017by
tensofthousandsofpeople.Tesedemonstrationswerethefirstmassgatherings
thatsweptacrossRussianprovinces(somewereorganisedeveninsmalltowns)
sincethe1990s.
Barriersandrestrictions,attemptstodiscreditthedemonstrations,media
censorshipandattacksbythugsdidnotdetertheprotestors.Whatismore,it
wasclear,startingwiththefirstMarchrally,thatalargenumberoftheprotesters
wereveryyoung.Teywereprimarilyhighschoolstudentsandteenagers.Tisis
