InearlyAprilthisyearIattendedapresentationinBerlinofaphotoproject
titledLostTerritories.Teprojectwascarriedoutbetween2008and2016bya
groupofphotographers,collectivelyreferredtoasSputnikPhotos.Duringthe
Berlineventoneofthephotographers,aPolenamedMichałŁuczak,presentedthe
mainpurposeoftheproject.Hispresentationwasfollowedbyadiscussionwitha
Russianwriter,SergeyLebedev,andme.Duringtheconversationwecametothe
conclusionthatthegreatestvalueoftheprojectdidnotlieintheartisticquality
ofthephotographsortheinterestingtravelrecollectionsthatweresharedbythe
photographers.Rather,itwashowitcapturedthetracesoftheSovietEmpire,both
materialandnon-material,whichcanstillbefoundtodayinwhatsomecallthe
post-Sovietspace.DoesthisfactmeantheSovietUnion,whichformallyceasedto
existoveraquartercenturyago,hassurvived,despiteconventionalwisdom?Or
perhaps,itsdeathisaslowandpainfulprocess?
