merEasternblocfoundthemselvesinshatters.Soaringunemploymentandpov-
ertyengulfedallthecountriesofCentralAsia.InKyrgyzstan,peoplelosttheir
jobsovernight,whileRussianshastilyabandonedtheformerSovietrepublicsto
returntothefallenmotherRussia.Astheyfled,theyleftbehindtheirhomes,jobs
andfactories.Whatremainedwassoonlooted,includingtherailwaytrackswhich
weresoldtoChinesescrapmetaldealers.
Telocalpeople,leftontheirown,didnotpossesstheadequateskillsandtech-
nicalknow-howinordertocontinueoperatingtheabandonedfactories.Helpless
inthefaceofthesuddengiftofregainedfreedomandindependence,theyfollowed
theRussiansthroughthegatewaytoMoscow.Butinsteadofstrikingitrich,what
awaitedtheminRussiawerelowsalaries,highlivingcostsandracism.Teywere
