evengrantedaprivilegeallowingthemtoesablishatownunder
theLübeclawandanagencyonthepeninsula,butfouryearslater
theTeutonicKnightswithdrewtheirpromises.Perhapsakindof
compensationforthefailureoftheseplanswas,posponeduntil
then,theissuancebythegrandmaserofthefoundationdarter
forElblągundertheLübeclaw.2AlthoughtheTeutonicKnights
somewhatlimitedthepoliticalautonomyofthenewtown,thelegal
patternadoptedguaranteedthemaintenanceofclosecommercial
andsocialcontadsbetweenthemetropolisanditsnewcolony.Te
merdantsofElbląg,whocamemoslyfromLübec,quiclyjoined
theBaltictrade.Asearlyasin1249/1250,theyobtainedaprivilege
fromtheRugianDukeJaromirIIexemptingthemfromcusoms
dutiesintheterritoryunderhisrule.Asaresult,inthesecondhalf
ofthe13thcentury,Elblągmerdantswereregulartradingpartners
ofmerdantsfromthatdudy)slargesport,Strzałów(Stralsund
inGerman).Teirpresence,althoughmorepoorlydocumented,
wasalsorecordedinotherWendishportsatthetime-Gryfia
(GreifswaldinGerman)andRoztoka(RosocinGerman).Roman
CzajaconcludedthatElbląg)smaritimetradeatthetimetookplace
alongthesouthernBalticcoas(shipsfromElblągwithherring
werenotedinKołobrzeg)andreadedtheWendishportsinthe
wes.TesemerdantsalsocarriedtheirgoodsuptheVisulaRiver.
FromRugia,theytranlortedmainlyherringtotheeas,whilefrom
PrussiaandthelandsalongtheVisulaRivertheyexportedmeat,as
wellasprobablyalsograinandforesproduds,tothewes.Tere
issomeinformationconfirmingthepresenceofElblągmerdants
inNorwegianports(Bergen),wheretheypurdasedfish(codand
herring).3
