theobjectivefortheGreekacademiclibrariesfortheyears1994-1999
wastomodernizesothattheycouldsupportscientificresearchandmeet
thecurrentteachingrequirements.
Comparingthesituationofthelibrariesbeforeandafterthetransfor-
mation,itisobviousthattheyhavegreatlyimprovedtheirservicesand
thecontextinwhichtheyoperate.Biggerandbetter-adjustedbuildings,
technologicalandcommunicationfacilities,automation,bettermanage-
mentconcept,standardization,innovation,professionaldevelopment,
communication,cooperationandinternationalrelationsarethekeywords
thatcharacterizethisperiod.
DatafromthestatisticalreportofTotalQualityManagementUnit
oftheacademiclibraries,in2010areveryrevealing.Academiclibrar-
ieshad:4.979.650newprintbooks,30.016currentsubscriptionsto
printandelectronicjournals(exceptforthoseofHEAL-Link,below),
4.521.569visitstotheelectronicresourcesaccessedfromlibraryweb-
sites(throughwhichusersaccessthedatabasesandelectronicjournals
ofHEAL-Link).
Alongwithindividualactionanddevelopment,academiclibraries
wereinvolvedinjointprojects,whichgaverisetoaconsortium.
Newprojectsweresuccessfullyimplemented.Theseinclude:the
digitizationofrarecollections,implementationofacademicrepositor-
iesandadvancedreferenceservices,enrichmentofprintcollections,
enhancementofelectronicandmediacollections,creationofinformation
literacyprojects,supportofe-learning,plustheincreaseofqualifiedstaff
withMastersandPhDdegreesand,consequently,theparticipationof
staffininternationalscientificandprofessionaleventsandactionswith
papersandposters4.
Academiclibrarieshaveemphasizeddigitizationofthecontent,
mainlyhistorical,culturalandscientificdocuments,freeofcopyright
restrictions.Theyalsocameupwithadditionalservicessuchasreference
andinformationliteracycourses.Andlastbutnotleast,threeacademic
librarieshaveearnedISO9000.
Unfortunately,inthelast5years,academiclibrariesbegantoface
problemscausedbytheonsetofaneconomiccrisis,austerefunds,
