librariesandtheyserve2or3counties(ageographicareamuchlarger
thantheirimmediatejurisdiction)[24].
Publiclibrariesareinaprivilegedpositionincomparisonwiththe
municipallibraries.Themainreasonisthattheyoperateunderthe
MinistryofEducation,LifelongLearningandReligiousAffairs,under
theSpecialCouncilofLibraries,ArchivesandEducationalTV
,thatis
tosay,theyareadministeredandfinancedbythecentralgovernment
withouttheliaisonwithlocalauthoritiesandpolitics.
Inthelastdecade,thelegislationframeworkwasmodernized,raising
theroleofthelibraryintheculturalandeconomicdevelopmentofthe
localcommunity6.Tosumup,themostimportantreasonforthedevelop-
mentoflibrariesistheunifiedlegislativeandadministrativepolicy[5].
Inthosedays,publiclibrariesfilledthegapofmanydecadesin
thesupplyofcomputersandotherelectronicequipment,useofISDN,
accesstoInternetviathenationalnetworkEDUNET,automationof
theircataloguingprocedures(OPACs)andotherservices(acquisitions,
circulation,periodicalscheckinetc.)usingtheΑΒΕΚΤ5automation
system,andprofessionaldevelopmentthroughlifelonglearningprojects
fortheirstaff.Themainreasonofthesuccessisawell-plannedstrategy
andthespendingofthebudgetinarational,effectiveandefficientway.
Centralpubliclibrariesorganizedmobilelibrariesinordertosupport
schoolsandperipheralareasaroundthecities.Thiswasaprojectaimed
atprovidingserviceforGreekcountryside.
Informationcentersinpubliclibraries
Informationcentersareaninnovativeprojectofthelastdecade,
fundedbytheEU.Theobjectivesoftheprojectwerethefollowing:
-advancementandmodernizationofthetraditionallibrarycatalogand
onlineaccesstonationalandinternationaldatabases;
-inter-libraryloanservicesonlocal,nationalandinternationallevel;
