KFreeGermania”,couldnotbedecidedbyamereclusterofcoins.
MorethanacenturyhadtopassafterMommsen’spublicationforevidence
fromhistory,ormoreprecisely,numismaticsandarchaeology,toconrmthathis
identicationhadbeencorrect.Asaresultofmetal-detectoruse,newndssurfaced
inthesamearea,andnowtheyrunintoseveralthousands.Otherthancoinsthey
includeelementsofRomanweapons,militaryequipment,etc.Theyshowthatabattle
foughtinthevicinityofKalkriese/Barenauehaddecidedthatcontrarytotheplans
ofAugustustheterritorybetweenRhineandElbewouldnotbeturnedintoanew
Romanprovince.TheareaofTacitus’GermaniaandPtolemy’sMagnaGermania
remainedoutsidetheEmpire,thus,outsidethereachofthemoreoutstanding
achievementsofRomancivilization.Thekeyevidencetolinkthendswiththesite
ofthebattleofAD9wasprovidedbythecoins,theirdating,proportions,presence
ofcountermarks,orincisionsmadeontheportraitoftherstRomanemperor.
NotwithoutreasonIproposedtorecallherethisspectacular,andnowuniversally
acknowledged,discoveryatsomelength.Ithasbeensignicantforthreereasons
ofahistoriographicandmethodologicalnature.First,ithelpedtobringabout
amajorbreakthroughintheapproachtothesignicanceofmetaldetectornds
amongmanyarchaeologistsinCentralEurope.Second,themethodsusedinthe
regionofKalkriesenowplayanimportantroleinidentifyingotherbattleeldsof
Antiquity.Thirdandlast,butcertainlynotleast,,asearlyasintheearlynineteenth
century,PolishresearcherslinkedlocalndsofRepublicanandAugustancoinsto
theaftermathoftheBattleoftheTeutoburgerForest.Eachofthethreesubjects
areaddressedatmorelengthbelow.
Amajorbreakthroughintherecordingofancientcoinnds,Romanin
particular,wasinthe1950s.Atthistimetherstregionalcataloguesofsuchnds
werepublishedonawiderscale,andtherstlong-termnationalprojectswere
launched,ofwhichpossiblythebestknownEuropeaninitiativewastheKCoin
FindsoftheRomanPeriodinGermany”Project(FundmünzenderrömischenZeitin
Deutschland,FMRDforshort),undertakenfrom1953inMunich,laterinFrankfurt
byK.Kraft,andsubsequentlyexpandedbyM.Radnoti-Alföldiandherteam.Inits
initialphasethisprojectwasnancedbytheGermanResearchFoundation,Deutsche
Forschungsgemeinschaft,andlateron,underthenewnameFundmünzenderAntike,by
theAcademyofSciencesandLitertureinMainz(AkademiederWissenschaftenund
derLiteratur,Mainz).Theprojectranformorethanhalfacentury,andhadamong
itsoutcomestheFMRDcatalogueinseveralvolumesultimatelycoveringalmost
theentireterritoryofGermany(exceptforcentralRhineland),andacompanion
seriesofStudienzuFundmünzenderAntikemonographs.Theresearchersinvolved
intheprojectstartedacooperationwithscholarsinmanycountries,includingthe
Netherlands,Luxembourg,Slovenia,andCroatia,aswellasHungaryandPoland,
