thewordriskisassociatedwithdanger,hazard,failure.TheInteractiveEncyclopaedia
saysthatriskis„thedangerofdamageoccurring,blamedontheaffectedpartyregardlessof
itsfault”and,further,itclaimsthat“itisapossibility,probabilitythatsomethingwillnot
succeed”

P.Matkowskispeaksaboutriskalongtheselines,adoptingthedefinitionthatriskis
“theuncertaintyofachievingfutureresults”.Healsoindicatesthattwokeyconceptsshould
beremembered:variabilityanduncertainty.Variabilityisaninternalfeatureoftheconcept
andcannotbereducedbybroadeningtheknowledgewhileuncertaintyreferstothelevelof
theresearcher'sknowledgeand,therefore,itcanbedecreasedbyincreasingtheknowledge
aboutthestudiedphenomenon
