Anotherimportantvirtueofthestudyistheunderstandingoftheneed
forasustainedanalysisofoneisolatedtext,albeitinanumberofmanu-
scripts,insteadofadoptinganoverambitiousprojectbeforeaproperly
exhaustiveanalysisofindividualworks.Indeedthepresentworkismuch
indebtedtoJongleurforprovidingthisconceptualframework,aswellas
fordevelopingthemethodologicalapparatustodealwiththeanalysisof
rhyme,withkeytermslikeflrhymeelement”,flconventionalrhyme”,
flsystematicrhyme”orflrhymecluster”(cf.QuinnandHall1982:39,42,
137),whichwillprovemostusefulforthefollowingchapters.
Byflrhymeelement”theauthorsofthestudymeanthesyllableending
therhymingwordswhichcontainstherhyme(cf.QuinnandHall1982:
39).flConventionalrhyme”isafrequentpairingoftworhymewordsin
writtenpoeticcomposition(cf.QuinnandHall1982:33-450),while
flsystematicrhyme”isawordcontainingarhymeelementusedrepeatedly
toconcludeeitherlineofacoupletinthesituationoforalcomposition
(cf.QuinnandHall1982:8).Finallyflrhymecluster”isthegroupofwords
usedinasinglemanuscriptversionofapoemwhichshareacommon
rhymeelement(cf.QuinnandHall1982:39).
Whatwill,however,differentiatetheforthcominganalysisfromthe
oneundertakenbyQuinnandHallisthat,first,onedealsherewithlater,
fourteenth-centurymanuscriptsinthecaseofwhichneithertextualnor
historicalevidenceseemstopointtoanysignificantelementoforalimprov-
isationbeingusedintheirdelivery,and,secondly,thetextsanalysedinthe
courseoftheparticularchaptersallexhibitarhymeschemeconsiderably
morecomplicatedthancouplets,whichwouldmakeasystematicstudyon
thelinesadoptedinJongleurunbearablycomplexwhiletheresults,ifthey
weretoberestrictedsolelytothetechnicalitiesinvolvedintheissues
relatingtorhymewithoutaccountingfortheformulaicsyntacticpatterns,
wouldnotyieldanaccurateoverallpictureofthetrouvère’smethodof
composition,especiallyifonerulesoutsystematicimprovisation.
Indeedtheweakestpointoftheanalysisundertakenbythetwoscholars
seemstobeprovingthelinkbetweenthemethodofgeneratingpairsof
rhymesevidentinKingHornandtheactualelementofimprovisation,as
itisnotalwaysevidentthatthemethoddescribedinthebookwouldhave
automaticallymadeiteasierforthejongleurtoimprovisethantoretrieve
segmentsofversewiththehelpofothermnemonicdevices.Thusinsome
sense,fromthehistoricalperspective,thestudyrepresentstheotherofthe
twoextremesofapproachinthestudiesoftheformulaicromancewhich
wasspecifictothe1980sandwastheresultoftherigidapproachofthe
