Space.”Tus,thehistoricalaspectofmemoryandplaceisrepresented,alongwith
theplaceofmemory.Tereisalsomemoryandplaceseenthroughtheprismof
theiremergenceinnarrativeanddiscursiverealities(instatunascendi);thereis
placeandnon-place,freefromanthropologicalmeanings;andthereisthehospita-
bleplace,thatis,onerecallingtheexperienceofneedforone)sownselfand,atthe
sametime,ofmultidimensionalrecognition.Memoryandplacearealsoentangled
inthechallengesassociatedwiththeneedtoplaceoneselfwithinacrowdedstruc-
ture,thatis-literallyandfiguratively-inthespaceoftherushofmeanings/senses
andofthephysicalandsymboliccrushthatisthecity.Tisstructurereflectsour
exantethinkingabouttherelationshipofmemoryandplaceinthesocio-peda-
gogicalperspective,resultingfromresearchandyearsofstudy.Wehavetreated
itasagroundfromwhich-thankstotheoutstandingqualityandwiderangeof
researchonthepartof“our”authors-theelementspresentedheremightgrow,
componentsofthedescriptionofthecategoryofmemory-place,aswellasaspects
ofitsmeaning.Wepresenttheseunderheadingsthatarethetitlesofsuccessive
partsofthistext.Weconcludewithaprospectiveunderstandingofmemory-place
instudiesandresearchthatwethinkareimportantinthelightofcontemporary
conditions,inparticularthoseconditionsthatcreateadominantideologicalfor-
mat,closingtheworldinanillusorypast.
