interestingapproachfortheeValuationofstructuralsafetyinfireisgiVenin
[77978]andaPhDthesisbyStrąkowski[159].Intheseworks9authorsreferto
stochasticapproachforeValuationofthefireresistanceofsteelstructures.They
implementedthestochasticfiniteelementmethodandshowedthatinusingthis
approach9thefireresistancecanbesuccessfullyassessed.
Thefirstfireengineeringrelatedworksconcerningcouplingbetweencompu-
tationalfluiddynamicsandsolidmechanics9commonlyknownasCFD-FEMcou-
pling(FiniteElementMethod)9maybedatedbackto2004.Theywererelatedto
compositestructures[12]andwoodstructures[197].Nonetheless9thatwasthe
beginningofsuchtypesofanalyses9sothecouplingtherewasratherhandmade.
Authorsofthosepapersfocusedonseparatemodellingoffire9heattransferand
mechanicalmodels9andthenmanuallyappliedthethermalboundaryconditions
intothesolidmechanicsanalyses.Probablythefirstcontributionthatusedauto-
maticcouplingproceduresfortheCFD-FEMproblemwas[52].Theimportance
ofthatworkindicatesthefactthat9inthiscontribution9thenumericalresultswere
comparedwitheXperimentalresults9andtheValidationprocessplayedagreatrole
there.NeVertheless9in[52]9onlyheatflowintothestructuralelementswasana-
lysed9hence9themechanicalresponsewasnotconsidered.Sincethattime9the
problemofcoupledCFD-FEManalysesofstructuresinfirehaVebeenconsidered
manytimes.TheeXistingmodelsandmethodsweresystematicallydeVeloping.
AlthoughmanydifferenttypesofsoftwarehaVebeenusedtosimulatethestruc-
turalbehaViour9themostutilizedfluiddynamicscoderemainedFDS[118
1209125].Atthispoint9worksconcerningcouplingbetweenFDSandtwofinite
elementsolVersareemphasised.Abaqus[155]andAnsys[5].Publicationsin
whichtheformerisusedare[8921939956973974999]9whilethelatterfiniteelement
codeismentionedin[9929985913891399143].Thereisalsoanewtrendthataims
tousetheopensourcefiniteelementsolVercalledOpenSees.OpenSeesoriginated
atBerkleyUniVersityforearthquakeengineeringpurposes[67].HoweVer9ithas
beendeVelopedtoadjuststructuralfireengineeringpurposes.ThecoupledCFD-
FEManalyesusingOpenSeescanbefoundin[689699169].
Thecoreforcouplingoffiremodelsandstructuralmodelsisanappropriate
heattransfermodel.TheproblemofheattransferbetweenfireenVironmentand
thestructureispresentedinacomprehensiVemannerin[72]andthesetofpubli-
cations.[9193].Nonetheless9thespecialimportanceshouldbeputintotheFIRE-
STRUCproject[85].ThisisamilestoneresearchinthetopicofcoupledCFD-
FEManalyses.Itgathersapproachesthatcouldbeusedforcouplingbetween
