oneclassoveranotherisaimedforthestabilityofthewholeandnotforexploita-
tionoftheworkingclasses.13Exploitationisheldwithinlimitsthataresupposed
tosecurestabilityofthewhole,becauseifguardiansattempttogetmore,itcan
easilyhappenthattheywillhavenothing.
[ł]ifeveraGuardiantriestomakehimselfhappyinsuchawaythathe
willbeaguardiannolonger;if,notcontentwiththemoderationandsecurity
ofthiswayoflivingwhichwethinkthebest,hebecomespossessedwith
somesillyandchildishnotionofhappiness,impellinghimtomakehispower
ameanstoappropriateallthecitizens’wealth,thenhewilllearnthewisdom
ofHesiod’ssayingthatthehalfismorethanthewhole.14
Thisrestrictionofclassprivilegesseeksstabilityofthewhole,too.Thus,
itisnotstrictutilitarianismintheformofcollectiveselfishness,butratheran
attempttodemonstratethemeaningoftheresponsibleacceptanceofone’srole
inthewholeuniverse.15
EvenifPlato’sphilosophyischronologicallyverydistant,itstillhassome-
thingtosay.Plato’sphilosophyemergesatthetimewhenpolisworlddisappears
