Ifhusbandwantstoruleoverthewholehousehold,hedestroystherelationship
andthuschangesaristocracytooligarchy.However,itisalsooligarchywhenthe
householdisruledbyawoman(itisrare,butitusuallyhappenswhenwoman
bringsgreatfortunetothemarriage).Herruleisoligarchy,becauseitisbased
onpowerandwealth.Themutualrelationshipofbrothersdemonstratesfeatures
oftimocracyasintimocracytheycountasequals.Ahouseholdwithoutmaster
whereallmembersareequalisdemocracy.21AccordingtoAristotle,monarchy,
aristocracyorpoliteiaaresuitablerules.Hestatesthat“fatheristheauthorof
beingwhichisesteemedthegreatestbenefitandofmaintenanceandeducation;
andbythelawofnaturethefatherhastherightofruleoverhissons,ancestors
overtheirdescendants,andthekingoverhissubjects.”22Thefamilyconsistsofa
fatherlheadandmasterofthefamily,wife,andslaves.23“Fewestpossibleparts
ofafamilyaremasterandslave,husbandandwife,fatherandchildren.”24Ac-
cordingtoAristotle,familyisaneconomiccellofthestate,becausethebasisof
thestateisorganizedandmaintainedaroundthefamily.Infamily,thereistoo
strongunityofelementslthesearerelationsbetweenhusbandandwife,parent
andchild,masterandslave.Duetotheserelationsandtheirunity,familycan-
notbecommunity.AccordingtoAristotle,thestateistheonlytruecommunity.
Onlyamasterlafatherwhohasdominantpositioninthefamilystandsout
fromfamilyandentersthestate.Evenifawifeisabletothinkincontrastto
aslave,shecannotmakedecisions.25“Ahusbandandfatherrulesoverwifeand
children.Themaleisbynaturefitterforcommandthanthefemale.”26Wife,as
wellasothermembersofthefamily,doesnotenterpolitics.Familyfulfillspri-
marilyabiologicalfunction.Economicfunctionoffamilyiswealththatisneces-
saryforfreetimeanditisafundamentaldeterminantforthepoliticallife.27
AccordingtoAristotle,itisimportantthatpeopleentermarriageintheir
bestageandatthebesttime(duringthebestseason).Heemphasizesthathus-
bandandwifemustgrowoldtogetheratthesametime,theycannotentermar-
riagewhiletheyaretooyoung,andtheagegapbetweenfatherandchildren
cannotbetoowide.Aristotlesuggeststhatgirlsshouldmarryattheageof18
andmenattheageof37.Weddingshouldtakeplaceinwintermonths.Pregnant
