Abstract:Inthreecloselyrelateddocuments,GaudiumetSpes,NostraAetate(Declaration
ontheChurch’sRelationtoNon-ChristianReligions),andDignitatisHumanae(Declarationon
ReligiousFreedom),theSecondVaticanCouncilcalledCatholicstodialogueandcooperation
withallpeopleofgoodwill,includingfollowersofotherreligioustraditions.WhiletheCatho-
licChurchhadalwaysbeenconcernedaboutthewell-beingofallhumans,theSecondVatican
CouncillaunchedanewerainCatholicrelationswithotherreligioustraditionsandwiththe
entirehumancommunity.Noearliercouncilhadtakensuchdramaticstepstoaddressallpeople
ofgoodwill,toseekhealingforpastconflicts,tospeakinpositivetonesaboutotherreligions,to
affirmthereligiouslibertyofallhumans,andtomoveforwardincollaborationwiththeentire
humancommunity.Thisessayexploresthistransformation.
