phrase“EastisEastandWestisWest,andneverthe
twainshallmeet”

nottoespouseabeliefinEurope’ssuperiorityover
theEastassomehadinterpretedit(thoughcertain-
lyhedidsubscribetothehistoricandcivilisational
missionofEuropeans),buttovoicehisconviction

peoplefromdifferentcivilisationsandculturesare
