valiantdeedslThiswasverywellreceivedbythe
public,whocameoutindrovesfortheexhibition’s

Polandhasaconstantlygrowingcommunityof
Japaneseweaponryaficionadosandenthusiastsof
thesamuraitraditionlTheydelightinthedecora-
tivenessandexoticismofthearmour,theexquisite-
nessoftheswordsandthecodeofhonourpracticed
bythewarriorslIsuspectthatinterestsofthiskind
areatleastinpartinfluencedbythechivalricethos
stillaliveinPoland,onethathasshapedourcul-
tureoverthecenturieslJapaneseandPolishknights
differedentirelyinculturebut,paradoxically,they
sharedtraitslikegreatvalour,puttinghonourbe-
forelife,asenseofprivilege,heroism,andreverence
foridealsl
ThethirdexhibitionIwishtomention,heldat
theNationalMuseuminWarsawfromlateFebru-
arytomid-May2017,wasalargeshowcaseofmore
thanthree-hundredukiyo-ewoodblockprintstitled
“JourneytoEdolJapaneseukiyo-eprintsfromthe
collectionofJerzyLeskowicz”
lAsindicatedinthe
title,theworksondisplaycamefromthecollec-
tionofJerzyLeskowicz,thegreatestlivingPolish
collectorofukiyo-ewoodblockprintslIntermsof
sheerquality,hiscollectionofnearly2000prints
canconfidentlycompetewiththefinestprivatecol-
lectionsanywhereintheworldlLeskowicznurtures
aparticularfondnessforthelandscapesofHokusai
(1790-1846)andHiroshige(1797-1858)andthe
portraitprintsofmasterslikeUtamaroandSharakul
Thediversityoftheworksmadeitpossibletoshow
abroadpanoramaofJapaneselifeandlandscapes
fromthe18thand19thcenturies,takingviewerson
animaginaryjourneyfromKyototoEdoalongthe
TōkaidōiKisokaidōroads,thetwomainroutes
linkingJapan’slargestcitiesinthatperiodl(illl9)
Whileputtingtogetherthatexhibition,
Ithoughtabouthowtoconstructanarrativethat
wouldnotexhaustthevisitorwithamultitudeof
rathersimilarworkslTheideatotakethemon
ajourneyintothepast-interpretedonseveral
levels,asatriptotheeraoftheTokugawashoguns’
reignandtoJapan’stwolargestcitiesoftheday,
imperialKyotoandtheseatoftheshogunate,Edo
-provedtohitthemarklVeryimportantinthat
undertakingwastheoutstandingexhibitiondesign
workofJacekGburczyklDrawinginspirationfrom
traditionalJapanesearchitecture,theartistcreated
anincrediblespacewhichtheviewercouldexplore
toimmersethemselvesinaworldofoldJapanas
theytookinthelandscapes,roads,citiesandpeople
ofthecountrylAccompanyingthemonthejour-
neywasthesoundofmusiclInoneroom,wealso
presentedthetraditionalprocessofmakingcolour

Theexhibitionwaswonderfullyreceivedand
thepeoplewhovisitedit,oftenmorethanonce,
expressedasinceredelightnotonlyfromtheshow’s
contentbutalsofromthegeneralaestheticexper-
ienceandthepleasuretheyfeltbeingtherelSo,
withitsstylisticothernessanddifficultsubjects
whichareoftenincomprehensibletotheaverage
viewer,whydoesJapaneseartattractandexciteso
