abroadwasconcerned,therewereaccordingtoProfessorPiotrWandyczthree
institutionalisedcentresofthoughtanddebatethroughoutthepost-Warperiod.In
therstplacetherewastheGovernment-in-ExilestillexistinginLondon,ifbereft
ofinternationalrecognition(notwithstandingthefactthatitrepresentedacontinu-
ationofthewartimegovernment),andinthesecondaUS-fundedcentreproviding
informationonPolandintheformofRadioFreeEurope(thePolishsectionlong
beingunderthedirectionofthe"courierfromWarsaw”,JanNowak-Jeziorański),
assistedbythePolishsectionofVoiceofAmericaandtheBBC.Thirdandnally,
therewasthemaincentreofculturalandintellectuallifeandthecreationofpoliti-
calthoughtamongthoseinexile,theParisKulturacircleledbyJerzyGiedroyć.
Backhome,therstcautiousattemptsatbuildinganalternativepoliticalpro-
grammeappearedafter1956,incircleslinkedtotheRomanCatholicChurch,
whichhadatthatpointregainedtherighttoexistinthepublicdomain.Whatwere
involvedherewereTygodnikPowszechnycirclesandtheZnakpublishinghouse,
aswellthemonthlyentitledWięźandCatholicIntelligentsiaClubsorKIKs.The
rstopenlyoppositiongroupsonlyappearedafter1976,whenthecommunistsys-
tembegantopassintocrisismodeandthethenauthoritiestriedalittlereform,as
wellasbecomingincreasinglytolerantoftheillegalpoliticalopposition(thanksto
theHelsinkiPrinciplesplusdependenceontheWestforcredit).Thebestknown
oppositiongroupingsbackthenincludedKSS"KOR”(originallytheWorkers,
DefenceCommitteeandthenlaterthe"KOR”CommitteeforSocialSelf-Defence),
RuchObronyPrawCzłowiekaiObywatelaorROPCiO(i.e.theMovementinthe
DefenceofHumanandCivilRights),KonfederacjaPolskiNiepodległejorKPN
(theConfederationofanIndependentPoland)andRuchMłodejPolskiorRMP
(i.e.theYoungPolandMovement).Inturn,outsidethecountry,therewasaneffort
topromotetextsdetailingwhathadbeenadoptedbythePolskiePorozumienie
NiepodległościoweorPPN(usuallytranslatedasthePolishLeagueforNational
Independence),whoseanonymousmemberswereasmallgroupofintellectuals
residentinsidePoland.25ThePPNoutputrepresentedthemostmature,wide-rang-
ingandgeopoliticallycompleteattemptatthecreationofapoliticalprogrammeas
regardsafreePoland,sforeignpolicy.OnceSolidarityhadcomeintobeing,most
oppositiongroupingsungthemselvesenthusiasticallyintoitsmaincurrent,creat-
ingunderitsbanneraverywide-rangingandexceptionallypluralisticdemocratic
opposition.Themovementspawnedarangeofconcepts,notsomuchrelatedto
Polishforeignpolicyperse,astothemainproblemsorissuesthatpolicyfaced,at
thetimeandinthethenforeseeablefuture.
Ingeneral,itisusualtorefertoforeignpolicyprogrammesbyconcludingthat
thethendemocraticoppositionrepresentedthreecurrents:therevisionist,thereal-
