Itshouldbenotedthatontheinitiative
oftheGovernorofAlexandria,Mr.
MohammedAbdelSalamMahgoub,the
immediatesurroundingsofthesitehave
beenarranged,theworkbeingfinanced
frommunicipalfunds.Thesquareand
parkingplaceonSafiaZaghloulStreet
andthesquareinfrontoftheMainRail-
wayStation(besidethetouristentrance
totheRomanTheatersite)weregivena
redesignedcommunicationsystem,new
pavements,newgreenarchitecture.A
strikingnewfencealongSafiaZaghloul
StreetandamonumenttoKhediveIsmail
installedtherehavegreatlyenhancedthe
viewofthearchaeologicalsite,increas-
ingpopularinterestintheancientruins.
Hence,ithasbecomeevenmoreimpor-
tantfortheMissiontoincreaseitsefforts
tocompletetheremainingconservation
inordertoopentheentiresitetothe
public.
Allthroughtheseasonworkcontin-
uedonremovingthesoildepositsinthe
TheaterPorticocloseto8,000m

this
seasonenablingtheteamtoundertake
therestorationofthePorticoincoming
seasons.
Inviewoftheabovementionedac-
tivitiesandtheapprovalbytheAmeri-
canResearchCenterinEgyptofacon-
servationprojecttoprotectsomeEarly
Romanmosaicsintheresidentialquar-
tereastofancientstreetR4,directlyad-
jacenttoSafiaZaghloulStreet,andto
buildashelteroverthem(EgyptianAn-
tiquitiesProjectUSAIDGrantNo.260-
000-G-00-3089-00),itprovednecessary
tomodifytheconservationworkpro-
grampresentedinVariantI.
