00089-00)devotedtotheconservationanddisplayofmosaicsfromanEarlyRomanvilla
locatedinthehabitationdistricteastofstreetR4,somesiteplanningworkintheareaofthe
excavationsabuttingSafiaZaghloulstreetbecameessential.Inrecentyearsthemunicipal
authoritieshadassignedconsiderableresourcesforanewparkinglotandpublicsquarealong
theeasternsideoftheexcavatedarea,introducinganewpavement,greenery,monumentof
KhediveIsmailandanattractivefencewithentrancegate.
Theconservationmission1)wasobligedtocarryoutlandscapingworkon350mof
slopealongtheeasternandsouthernborderoftheconcessionarea,includingretainingwalls
forthedeeperarchaeologicaltrialpits(Figs.1,2).AlexandriaGovernorMohammedAbdel
Salamel-Mahgubgrantedthenecessaryfundstohavetheseslopescoveredwithgrass.
Awatersupplypipewasinstalledallalongtheescarpment.
