Theshelterisaglassstructure,
measuring15by12m,placedbetweenthe
wallsofexistingByzantinebuildings.The
gabledroofofbeige-coloredcorrugated
sheetmetalrefersinformtoancientroofs.
Fourroomswithmosaicfloorswere
subjectedtoconservationtreatment,and
adisplaywasprepared.Adjacenttothe
tricliniumonthesouthisafragmentarily
exposedcourt.Thevillawallswererebuilt
(inpartialanastylosisusingancientstone)
toaheightof160cm,thatis,the
Byzantineoccupationlevel.
Therooftrussesaresupportedonasteel
beamonthenorthandaconcretebeamon
thesouth.Theconcretepillarscarryingthe
beamconstitutepartoftheretainingwall
oftheslopebehindtheshelter.Multi-
layeredinsulationwasintroduced.Visitors
passoverawalkwaysuspended1mabove
themosaicfloors.Thethermalinsulation
oftheroof(hardstyrofoamsheets4cm
thick)andtheventilationsystempermit
astabletemperaturetobemaintainedin
theshadeevenonthehottestdays.
Themosaicfloors,madeindifferent
periodsandinavarietyoftechniques,were
allsubjectedtoconservationtreatmenton
thespot.Afullreportfromthisworkisto
bepublishedsoonbyARCEinCairo.
BUILDINGANDCONSERVATIONWORKS
Inkeepingwiththelong-termprogramfor
openingtheexcavationareatotourists,
buildingandconservationworkwascarried
outindifferentpartsofthesiteinaddition
totheactivitiesonthemosaicshelter.
Inthecisternsthepartialreconstruction
ofthenorthfacadewascompleted,
includingprotectionofinternalvoids,
overhangs
and
cracking
caused
by
earthquakesinantiquity(Figs.4,5).2)
Workoncleaningandcompletingthe
causeway,impregnationofwalltopsand
waterdrainingsystemisadvancedand
shouldbefinishedinthecomingseason.
Awater-drawingmechanism(saqia)may
alsobeinstalledabovethedoublewell.
Inthebaths,workstartedonprotecting
theruinedentrancetotheunderground
serviceareaandtheouterwallofthe
complexinitseasternsection.Fragmentsof
thiswallwerereconstructedusingancient
buildingmaterial(akindofanastylosis),and
theeasternpartoftheslopewasdoneaswell.

adamagedengagedcolumnfromthe
pseudo-peristyleofthevillacourtwas
prepared,supportingthesuspendedoriginal
partsofthiscolumnfoundhigheruponthe
wall.Aceramictileroofwasintroduced
abovethetwosurvivingdomesofthevilla,
whichwereprotectedbeforehand.
Inpreparationforthelandscapingof
theearthslopeonthespotofanearly
Roman
inter-block
alley,
work
was
undertakenoncompletingtheexternal
wallofthevillaabuttingthispassage.The
conditionofthiswallisverybad,ithaving
beenpartlyrobbedoutinantiquityand
partlydisintegratedandleaningdueto
frequentearthquakes.Furtherconservation
treatmentisrequired.Thesoclehasbeen
completedonadistanceof5m,wherethe
wallhadbeendismantleddowntothe
ground.Thesoclepermitsadraintobe
installedheretocarryoffrainfallfromthe
slopeaboveit.
Provisionalprotectionworkhasbeen
startedintheearlyRomanvillauncovered
underthepavementofthetheaterportico.
