downtothelevelofthefoundations.This
sectionofthewallwasmostprobably
dismantledinthe13thcentury,as
evidenced
by
some
ceramic
finds,
consistingmostlyofMamlukglazed
potteryfragments.Asingleinscribedblock
(Fig.8),foundamongthescattereddebris
andcollapsedwallblocksappearstohave
beenreusedinthewallstructure;assuch,it
hasnodirectchronologicalbearingonthe
structure.
Nevertheless,
this
Greek
inscriptionappearstobeofconsiderable
historicalandprosopographicsignificance,
sinceitreportthecareerofTiberius
ClaudiusIsidorus,epistrategusofthe
Thebaid,
graphusandarabarch.12)

Workwasalsocontinuedonthe
westernsectionofthesaidwall,efforts
beingconcentratedonexcavatingthe
entrancetotheundergroundserviceareaof
thebath.Thebarrelvaultovertheentrance
chamberwasfoundtobeseriously
damaged
as
a
result
of
systematic
plunderingofbuildingmaterialinthe
12th-13thcent.AD.
