IrememberBill,ashisfriendsusedtocallhim,asamanofaction,alwaysbusyandpractically
neverwithoutasmileonhisface.Alwaysreadytosharetheenormousknowledgehehad.Hewas
connectedwiththeUniversityofChicagofromtheverybeginning.In1973hecompletedhisPh.D.
dissertationonAncientEgyptiancoregencies,whichwaspublishedfouryearslaterandwhichhasnot
lostanyofitscurrencyeventoday.ShortlybeforethathejoinedtheOrientalInstituteEpigraphic
SurveyasanepigrapherandworkedattheChicagoHouseinLuxoruntil1985.Healsopartici-
patedindiscussionsconcerningthetemplesofHatshepsutandTuthmosisIIIatDeirel-Bahari,
whichthePolishteamhasbeenrestoringinthepastfewdozenyears.Heshowedhimselfthenasa
greatfriendofus,Poles.
Billwasarespectedscholar.Hisbook“TheRoadtoKadesh:AHistoricalInterpretationofthe
BattleReliefsofSetyIatKarnak”(1985)wassoldoutwithinacoupleofyearsandanewrevised
editionwaspublishedin1990.WorkingatChicagoHouse,Billalsocontributedsubstantiallyto
theEpigraphicSurveyseries,includingvolumeson“TheBattleReliefsofKingSetyIatKarnak”,
andtothe“ReliefsandInscriptionsattheLuxorTemple”series.Hislastworkwas“Textsfromthe
AmarnaPeriodinEgypt.”
