ThePreservationandArchaeologicalProjectatKomel-Dikkaisfinancedjointlybythe
SupremeCouncilofAntiquitiesandthePolishCentreofArchaeologyofWarsawUniversity
inCairo.ThecampaigncoveredinthisreportwascarriedoutbetweenOctober2001andthe
endofJune2002.1)WorkwaslargelyconditionedbythedemandsoftheKomel-Dikka
PreservationProject,requiringtopprioritytobeaccordedexcavationsandpreservation
activitiesintheTheatrePortico.
Aprojectforthecleaningandconservationofthevastcoincollectionproceeded
concurrently,asdidastudyofamphorastampsfromearlierexcavations.Thelatterhasbeen
concludedandthecollection(578objectsinall)hasbeentransferredtotheSCAstorerooms.
1)UntilDecemberthemissionwasheadedbyDr.WojciechKolątajwhohasnowretiredafterdevotingmorethan25
yearsofhisprofessionallifetotheProject.FromJanuary2002onwardsthemissionwasdirectedbyDr.Grzegorz
Majcherek.Thestaffincluded:Mrs.RenataKucharczyk,Mrs.IwonaZych,MsGrażynaBąkowska,MsMartaŻuchowska,
archaeologists;Mr.WiesławKuczewski,Mr.WładysławWeker,Mrs.EwaParandowska,conservators;MsDariaTarara,
architect;aswellasMsElizaSzpakowska,MsAgnieszkaNiemirka,MsAleksandraIwanowskaandMsPaulinaLis,students
ofarchaeology.Duetoabusyschedule,Prof.BarbaraLichocka,wasabletojointheteamforafewdaysonly.Messrs.Ahmed
MussaandMohammedel-SenussiefficientlyrepresentedtheSupremeCouncilofAntiquities.Asalways,theMissionwas
assuredtheinvaluablehelpandfriendlyassistanceoftheSCAstaffinAlexandria,towhomweareimmeasurablyindebted.
