About40moftheoriginallevelofthe
porticohasbeenexposedbynow.Two
extantsectionsofthepavementwerecleared
alongthestylobateandthebackwall.
AREAM
TheworkinAreaMwasconcentrated
immediatelynorthoftheTheatre,behind
thePorticobackwall.Anexistingtrench
wasenlargedtowardthenorthtouncover
thecourseandrelationtootherfeaturesof
apeculiardouble-walledstructurethatwas
firstexcavatedinthe1960s.Thetwo
walls,setsome1.90mapart,werebuiltin
identicalpillartechnique,thespace
betweenthepillarsfilledwithadouble-
facedcurtainwall(0.55-0.60mthick)
madeofsmallirregularstonessetinan
ashymortar.Thewallswereadditionally
joinedwithrandomcrosswalls,there-
sultingeffectbeingacasemateofsorts.
Thetheoryhasalreadybeenadvancedthat
thestructurewasdesignedtoretainalarge
moundthathadformedbehindthe
TheatrebytheendofAntiquity.
Severalgravesofthemedievalcemetery
wereexploredinthisarea(Fig.5).Tombsof
theUpperNecropolis(nos.M350-M357)
wereclearedatc.12-12.50mabovesea
level.Theywerelargelydisturbedand
poorlypreserved,mostoftheaboveground
structuresdamaged,especiallyinthearea
adjoiningtheporticobackwall(possibly
duetolaterstonerobbing).
