ThefifthseasonofPolishexcavationsatMarealastedfromAugust14toSeptember27,
2004.1Excavationinfourseparateareasofthebasilicanchurch,theexplorationofwhich
commencedin2003,ledtotheclearingofthenorthwingofthetransepttogetherwithcollateral
chapel,thetracingofthemainchurchentranceinthewestwallofthecomplex,andthe
investigationoflateralroomsbeyondthesouthwesterncornerofthechurch.Furtherworkwas
alsodoneonthekilndiscoveredlastyearundertheapse.
Geomorphologicalstudiesinitiatedinthe2000season,whichwereaimedatdetermining
environmentalconditionsatdifferentstagesinthesettlementoftheancienttownatMarea,as
wellasafteritsabandonment,werenowcompleted.2Humanremainsexcavatedinprevious
seasons3inthefunerarychapel(thirtyindividuals)andthetwocryptsinthebasilica(more
thanonehundredindividuals)weresubjectedtoanthropologicalexamination.Adultsofboth
gendersandvariousagesatdeath,fetuses,newborns,infants,childrenandyouthwere
identified,butthecauseofdeathcouldnotbeestablishedforlackofcompleteskeletons.
