theeasternendfacilitatedreuse.Tomake
space,theearlierburialswereconsistently
pushedtothewestside.
Partofthenecropolisinthenorthern
partofsectorEprovedtobedelimitedby
alowwall.Itisbelievedtomarkafamily
enclosure.
OncetheUpperNecropolistombshad
beencleared,twophasesoftheMiddle
Necropoliswereuncovered.Thelaterlayer
withtengraves(E120-E124,E127-E131)
waslocatedhalfameterabovetheeight
gravesfromtheearlierphase(E125,E126,
E132-E137),whichwererecordedatadepth
from8.90to9.10ma.s.l.[Fig.2].The
extentofthecemeteryinthetwophases
wasthesame,butindividualtombsdid
notoverlap,hencethedivisionintotwo
phasesseemsjustifiable.Thesuper-
structuresofthesegravesmeasuredmostly
2.00-2.20by2.50m(hencetheywere
obviouslylargerthanthemonumentsof
theUpperNecropolisdescribedabove)and
theywereconstructedofoneortwocourses
ofregularstoneblocks.Occasionally,the
superstructureswereplastered.
Alltheburialsweremadestraightinthe
ground.Virtuallynothingoftheskeletal
materialhasbeenpreservedowingtothepoor
conditionsofdepositiononKomel-Dikka.
SECTORG
Elevengravesofthesametype,belonging
totheMiddleNecropolis,werediscovered
inanadjoiningsectionofSectorG(G203-
G213).Thetombsuperstructuresinthese
caseswerealsoconstructedofbigregular
stones.Theskeletalmaterialfromthegrave
pitshasnotsurvived.
ThesamedivisionoftheMiddle
Necropolisintotwophasesofusewas
