Duringthe2004/2005season,partofthe
skeletalmaterialexcavatedfromthe
IslamiccemeteriesonKomel-Dikkain
Alexandriain2002-2004wassubjectedto
anthropologicalanalysis.1Ofthe32grave
unitsthatwerestudied,29belongedtothe
so-calledUpperNecropolis(11th-12th
century),onetotheMiddleNecropolis
(9th-10thcentury)andonetotheLower
Necropolis(7th-8thcentury).2Onefurther
gravewastentativelyattributedtothe
UpperNecropolis.Theanalyzedseries
consistedmainlyofbadlyfragmentedand
erodedremains.Muchofthematerialwas
mixedowingtothecollectivecharacterof
theburialsthatwereexcavated.
Theminimalnumberofindividuals
identifiedintheskeletalmaterialfromthe
graveunitswasdeterminedat83.Of
these,32weremen,334womenand13
children.Thelastgroupincluded,apart
fromInfansIandInfansIIskeletons,
individualsofIuvenisage,whosegender
couldnotbedetermined.Inthecaseofthe
remainingfourindividuals,genderwas
indeterminableowingtoinsufficientdata.4
Thepercentageshareofeachofthese
groupscomparedtotheentireexamined
seriesalongwithgenderdistribution
acrossthethreecemeterieshasbeen
presentedinTable1.Virtuallythesame
information,excludingmarginallyre-
presentedLowerandMiddleNecropolises,
