2005:53).
Tefindsandinteriorfurnishings
fromunit24suggestedthatitwasakind
oftavern(?).Asmallclosed-olspace
inthenortheasterncornermayhavebeen
usedformealpreparation.Findsincluded
145shellsofedibleclamsandsnails,
andaconsiderableamountofpottery,
tablewareandkitchenware.Temost
interestingfindwasaglasstheatremask
appliedasadecorativeelementtothe
handleofaglassvessel[Fig.9,bottom
right].1
UNITSNORTHWEST
OFTHEBASILICAENTRANCE
Explorationtothenorthwestofthemain
entrancetothebasilicaconcentrated
foremostonanairvent,whichcouldbe
seeninthetopofawallthatextended
thepartitionwallbetweenthecourtyard
(unit18)andreceptionhall(unit20)
locatedtothesouthofthechurch
entrance.Abreadovenbuiltoftwo
stoneswasdiscoveredintheupperlayers
(onthespotofunit30),0.67mbelowthe
topofthewall;theairventwaslocated
immediatelyabovethisoven.Sherdsof
7th-8thcenturyamphoraewerefound
insidethisoven.
Moreconfirmationoftheeconomic
functioningofthebasilicacamefromthe
explorationoftwoadjoiningroomsand
cellarbelowthem[Fig.11].Tesouthern
ofthetwounits,29,containedastaircase,
enteredfromthewest.Tespaceunder
thestairswasopenandwasreachedfrom
unit30throughadoorwaywithpreserved
hinges.Terewasadirtfloorinthisunit.
