Inthepastsixyearspractically70%ofthe
topmostcourseofthepartofthejettycon-
structedinthesecondphasewasvandal-
ized,leavingonlyfivestoneblocksinplace.
Photographicdocumentationfrom2004
aswellasextantelementssuggest,however,
thatthelayoutwassimilartothatinthe
partofthejettyofthefirstphase.Alternat-
ingrowsofheadersandstretchersmadeuse
ofAblocks.
Attheendofthejettythereare
twocurvilinearfeaturesonthelevelof
courseIandbondedwithmortarto
blocksofcourseII.Eachfeatureconsistsof
fivestones,theimprintofasixthoneonthe
southernside,andonestonewithimprints
oftwootheronesonthenorthwest.Te
outlineofthesefeaturesclearlyindicatesthe
locationofthecentreofthecircletheyhad
onceformedandsetsitsdiameteratabout
140cm.Onlyonecourseofmasonryis
extantanditbearsnotracesofmortarthat
wouldhaveindicatedtheoriginalpresence
ofmoresuperimposedcourses.

Tecasingstructureandblockdimensions
aredilerent.Bblockswereusedasfilling,
placedparallelandperpendiculartothe
jettyaxis,whilethecasingconsistedof
Ablocksinanunusualarrangementwith
aheaderbetweeneverytwostretchers,cre-
atingtooth-likeserrationsonbothsidesof
thiscourse.Itwasalsopossiblehypotheti-
callythattherewereoriginallytwoheaders
insteadofoneandformedasmoothface
onbothsides;ifthatwasthecase,thenthe
absenceofthesecondheadermaybedueto
progressingerosionofthejetty.
CourseIIIofthesecond-phasesector
ofthejettyisonlypartlyvisibleatthetip,
whereasinotherplacesonlythecasingis
exposed.TecourseconsistedofBblocks
laidtransverselymoreofenthanparallel
tothejettyaxis.Itislikelythat,compared
tothepartbuiltinphaseI,amuchsmaller
sectionofthecoursewasfilledwithamix
ofCstonesandsand.Tismaybededuced
fromthedimensionsofa“shaf”atthetip
ofthejetty,wherethematerialhadbeen
washedawaybythelake.Ifitwasindeed
so,then40%ofthedescribedcoursewould
haveconsistedof“aggregated”sandand
Cblocksandasmuchas60%wouldhave
beenBblocks.Inthefirstphase,thisrela-
tionshiphadbeenreversed.Teexposed
fragment
shows
another
interesting
pattern.Movingfromthewater’sedge,one
canseearow(blockslaidparalleltothe
jettyaxis)ofalternatingpairsofheaders
andstretchers,thenarowconsistingonly
ofstretchers.Behinditisthe“shaf”eroded
bywater,mostlikelycontainingtheabove
described“aggregate”
.
