Teattributionofparticularlinesto
agivenitemresultsfromthearrangement
ofthetext:theyaresetinabout1cm
towardtherightmargin.Specificationsof
workmenandcrafsmenareaccompanied
bynumerals(from1to6)indicatingthe
numberofhiredmen.NextistheGreek
lettermiwithsuperscribedhorizontal
line,whichisthesymbolofamiriadof
denarii.Itisfollowedbyanumber,which
isevidentlytheproductofthenumberof
workmenandtheirsalaries.Payappears
tohavebeencalculatedonadailybasis.
Insomelinesextendingtotherightthere
istheabbreviationπι(),followedbythe
numeral.Temeaningofthisisunclear.
Sumswerewrittenatthebottomofeach
document,aferaspaceoftwoorthree
lines.
Tewritingmaterialfortheostrakawas
preparedfromthebodiesofLateRoman4
amphora,theplainsurfacesofwhichwere
perfectaswritingmaterial.TeseGazan
containersstartedtobeusedinthe5th
century,aferAD450(Peacock,Williams
1986:198-199).
Tebiggestdocumentinthisgroupof
ostrakaismadeupoffivejoiningsherds
(Inv.No.1+2+11+27+43/2011)[Fig.7].
Itisapalimpsestandcontainsabuilding
receipt.Consideringthecontextofthe
find,itisverylikelythatthebuilding
whichthereceiptsconcernedwasthe
basilicalocatedintheimmediatevicinity.
Allthingsconsidered,thesetisthe
largestofitskindfrom5thcenturyEgypt
andisuniqueinthatitcontainsbuilding
receiptsreferringinalllikelihoodtothe
constructionofthenearbybasilica.
