Tepassageofyearsandexperience
withconservationintheconditionsof
thesitehaveledtotheadoptionofnew
approachesandmaterialsinseasonal
maintenancework.Forexample,themud
brickusedoriginallyinthereconstruction
ofthepotteryfurnacesuferedcomplete
degradationaferjustfourseasons.Itwas
replacedwithahardermaterial,namely,
Byzantinebakedbricksalvagedfromthe
excavations.
Workwascarriedoutonthesouthand
westwallsinthepastophory[Fig.10].
Inbothcases,thewallsneededtohave
masonrysubstructuresoflimestoneblocks
(modernblocks,cutwithasaw,30x14x
11cm)introducedtopreventtheancient
substancefromcollapsing.Asand-lime
bondingmortarwasapplied(6parts
sand,1partlime,1partwhitecement).
Tecoveringplastercoatsweretwofold:
alevelinglayerandasecondcoatthatwas
theface,madeofthesamekindofmortar
with10%wateremulsionofPrimal
AC33addedtoit.
Conservationofthebronzecoins
fromtheMareaexcavationsstartedwith
mechanicalcleaning,designedtoremove
dirtandlayersofcorrosion.Dental
toolswereusedfirst,followedbybaths
in10%solutionofedetatedisodium.
Corrosionwasthenremovedandthe
coinsneutralizedindistilledwater.Last,
thecoinswerecoatedwith5%solutionof
ParaloidB72.
