TemagnificentgreatbayoftheclilsatDeirel-Bahariwasthesitechosenbythepharaohs
NebhepetreMentuhotepII,AmenhotepI,HatshepsutandTuthmosisIIIfortheir
mortuarytemples.Until1893ithadbeendominatedbytheremainsofaCopticmonastery
thathadrisenontopofthetempleruins,atallbricktowerbeingthesalientfeatureofthis
complex.ItwascalledtheMonasteryoftheNorth,inArabic“Deirel-Bahari”
.
FromthetimeoftheNapoleonicexpeditiontoEgyptattheendofthe18thcentury
thesitehadbeenvisited,examined,dugover,andsuperficiallyinvestigatedbytravellers
aswellasbyseriousscholars.JohnGardnerWilkinsongaveanametothesite,Richard
LepsiusprobedmorecarefullyandidentifiedHatshepsutasthefounderofthetemple,
AugusteMarietteturnedhisgangsoftemple-clearersontothesite.In1893,Edouard
NavilleembarkedonacomprehensiveclearanceofthesurvivingstructuresoftheTempleof
HatshepsutonbehalfoftheEgyptExplorationFund(HowardCarterhadbeenemployed
asa‘tracer’fortheFund).HerbertE.Winlock,whocametoDeirel-Bahariattheheadof
theexpeditionoftheNewYorkMetropolitanMuseumofArt,workedinandaroundthe
templesofMentuhotepandHatshepsut.
Tenin1961,KazimierzMichałowskiacquiredtheconcessionforthereconstruction
ofthethirdterraceofthetempleofHatshepsut.Heorderedtheclearanceofahugeheap
ofrockydebristhatobscuredthegroundoutsidethesouthwesternpartofthetemple.
TusthehithertounknowntempleofTuthmosisIIIwasdiscovered.
WithourpresentknowledgetherecanbenodoubtastothegreatsanctityoftheDeir
el-Bahariarea,whichincludestheAsasifValleyandKhokhaMountain,fromatleastthe
endoftheOldKingdomonwards.TeprestigiousMiddleKingdomandNewKingdom
templeswerebuiltinaplacealreadysanctifiedbyOldKingdomgraftiabovethetemple
andthetomboftheEleventhDynastyQueenNeferu.TirdIntermediatePeriodandlate
antiqueburialsassociatedwiththeCopticmonasteryfollowedintheruinsofthetemple
precinct.
TesacredlandscapeofDeirel-BahariareaismorethanjusttheTempleof
HatshepsutwhichhasbeenthefocusofegyptologistsandrestorersfromthePolish
CentreofMediterraneanArchaeology,UniversityofWarsawformorethanhalf
acenturynow.Tus,thescopeofresearchcarriedoutwithinandbeyondtheQueens
TemplefarexceedsissuesconnectedwiththeNewKingdomcomplex.Withthisfirst
issueoftheDeirel-BahariStudies,publishedasaSpecialStudiesfascicleofthePCMA
