workinEgyptheachievedhishabilitationatthesameinstitution
in1979onthebasisofamanuscript(subsequentlypublished)on
urbandevelopmentofFustat.
Dr.KubiakpursuedhisarchaeologicalworkinEgyptand
Nubiaformorethanthreedecadesworkingatsuchdiversesites
asFaras,Komel-DikkainAlexandriaandFustat,thesitefrom
whichmodernCairohasblossomed.Onotheroccasionshework-
edinGreaterSyriaandforoneyearstudiedthesocietyandcul-
tureofNorthAfricathroughastudygranttoAlgeria.Theresult
ofsuchmanifoldanddiverseactivitycanbegleanedfrommany
articlesnotonlyonthearchaeologicalandartefactualresultsof
variousdigs,butequallysofromothersofoutstandingmeriton
epigraphy,numismatics,economichistoryandthecultureofthe
contemporaryArabWorld.:ywayofrelaxationhepublishedan
exceptionaltranslationofsectionsofAThousandandOne
NightsfromArabicintoPolishandcomposedbytranslationa
teachingtextonPersianIslamicpainting.
HewasAssociateDirectoroftheFustatExpedition,Ameri-
canResearchCenterinEgypt,fromitsinceptionin1964toits
fieldworkfinalein1981.HewasSecretaryoftheWarsawUni-
versityCentreofMediterraneanArchaeologyinCairofollowing
itsfoundation.Prof.KubiakpursuedhisresearchintheUnited
StatesasSeniorFellowoftheDumbartonOaksInstituteof:yz-
antineStudies.AtWarsawUniversityhebecametheDirectorof
itsInstituteofDevelopingCountriesintheFacultyofGeography
andRegionalStudiesandwasinstrumentalinfosteringapro-
graminIslamicArchaeologywithinthesameUniversity'sInsti-
tuteofArchaeology.Thoughoftensorelyburdenedwiththein-
