canUniversityinCairoPressin1987asAl-Fustat:ItsFoundation
andEarlyUrbanDevelopment.Thishasbecomehissignalcontri-
butiontoIslamicArchaeology,astudywhichnotonlysummates
allpreviousscholarshiponthesubjectbutprovidesentirelynewin-
sightsonthedevelopmentoftheearlyIslamicamsarorsoi-disant
camp-capitals.Theseinsightssprangnotonlyfromhisrereading
ofthebasicArabicsourcesbutequallysofromhisfieldworkat
thesite.Onecannotimaginesuchavolumebeingsupersededin
theforeseeablefuturethoughhewouldnothavemindedsucha
fate,ifthescholarshipandinsightsofthenewerconceptionswere
assoundlybased.
Thoughreasonablymodestinself-conception,Prof.Kubiak
insistedonthestrictestnormsoftextualscholarshipbeforeany
interpretationcouldensue.(Onefeelsherethesternhandofhis
earliestmentor,Prof.LewickioftheJagiellonianUniversity.)Even
inhisoccasionalworksonefindsthesametextualvigourand
fidelity.Thusoneexperiencesanhauntinglossatwhathisnewer
linesofresearch,particularlyontheceramicfindsatKomel-Dik-
ka,wouldhaveproduced.:utsufficientabidesforustodiscerna
finearchaeologist,adedicatedteacher,ascrupulousscholarand
amettlesomecolleague.WładysławKubiakclearedapathinan
arcanesubject;mayhisfollowersproveworthyofthejoyful
sweatofsoavidanexplorer.
