Thisissueofthequarterlyisdesignedarounddisabilitypreventionbroadlydefined.
Eachpaperanalyzesriskfactorsthatmaybeeliminatedindevelopingbothprimaryand
secondarydisability.
Mustafinsetal.presentedapaperonfrequencyandtypesofinjuriesinathleteswith
disabilities,membersofWorldOrganizationVolleyballforPersonswithDisability
(WOVD).In1995–2008thestudywascarriedouton474sitting(SV)and55standing
(StV)volleyballplayersfrom30countries.Theobtainedresultssuggestthatitispossible
toreducenumberofinjuriesandtheirconsequences.Theauthorsdescribedfactors
contributingtomusculoskeletalsystemdysfunctionsandimpairmentsandfocusedon
thoseresultingfromdisabilityaswellasthoseresultingfromtrainingload,trainedstate
ortrainingconditions.Theseresultsmaybeofpracticaluseasthedataonthefactors
predisposingtoinjuriesarewidelyusedindesigningpreventiveprograms.
Inhisstudy,Skukasevaluatedtheinfluenceofadaptedphysicalactivityonperforming
everydayactivities,wheelchaircontrolandphysicalfitnessinindividualswithcomplete
spinalcordinjury(accordingtoASIA).Theinvestigatedsubjects,aged18–42years,were
dividedintosubgroupsaccordingtothelevelofspinalcordinjury,sustainedtwoyears
priortothestudy.Improvementinperformingeverydayactivities,chaircontroland
physicalfitnesswerefoundduringoutpatientrehabilitationusingtheadoptedphysical
activityprogram.TheauthorstakeacriticalapproachtousingFunctionalIndependence
Measurescale(FIM)inassessingeverydayactivitiesperformedbywheelchairoccu-
pants.Additionally,wheelchaircontrolabilityskilltestwasdesignedforindividualswith
spinalcordinjury,whichaccordingtotheauthorprovedpositivechangesintheability
skillsaftertherehabilitation.Theauthoralsosuggestedfurtherresearchintoproper
instrumentsandmethodsoffunctionassessmentconsideringspeedofperformed
activities,energyexpenditureandphysicalfitnessneededforanactivitytobeperformed
byanindividualwithspinalcordinjury.
Kwoleketal.focusedonevaluationoffactorswhichmaycontributetoasubsequent
strokeinpatientsafterischaemicstroke.Amongmethodsofsecondaryprophylaxis
ie.preventingsubsequentstroke,theauthorsstressbeneficialroleofphysicalactivity.
Favourabledecreaseinbloodplateletsusceptibilitytopro-aggregationfactorswas
foundafterthree-weekrehabilitationprogramcombinedwithmildphysicalactivity
inpatientsafterstroke,whichwasnotobservedthreemonthsafterrehabilitation.
Thesefindingsconfirmbeneficialeffectofmildphysicalactivityinreducingriskofa
subsequentstroke.
Rathoreetal.designedaquestionnaireonknowledgeofdisabilityandproblemsexpe-
riencedbypatientswithadisabilitywhichwascarriedoutinPakistanihealthworkers.
Theobtainedresultsrevealedthattheknowledgewasgoodinsomewhilepoorin
otherareas.Theauthorssuggestintroducingdisabilityissuesintocurriculumforall
medicalstudents,bothunder-andpostgraduates.Improvementinlegalregulationsis
neededaswellassocialintegrationofindividualswithadisability.Accordingtotheauthors
stigmaisdependentonbothsocialandculturalidentities.
Thepapersarepresentedwithanemphasisonarousingyourinterest,provoking
reflectionandencouragetoexplorethesubject.
