OverviewandObservations
TeintensificationofPolishemigrationinthepastdecade,andmost
obviouslysincethe2004enlargementoftheEuropeanUnion,hashadapro-
foundimpactondifferentEuropeancountries,bothforreceivingcountriesfor
newmigrations,andforPolanditself.Notsurprisingly,this!new’movement
ofpeoplehasnotgoneunnoticedacrossEurope.WithintheUK,forexample,
therehasbeenconsiderablepublicandacademicinterestinthismigration,sig-
nallingthattheinfluxofPolishpeopleintothecountryhasbeenoneofthekey
migration!stories’ofthedecade(see:Burrell,2010).Tesecollectedpapersall
considerdifferentaspectsofthisrecentmigratoryphenomenon;indoingsothey
touchoninterestingandimportantissuesaboutthemulti-scalar(seealso:For-
tier,2006)natureofthis,andany,populationmovement.Tisoverviewtakes
thesepapersasastartingpointandexploresfourdimensionsofthescalingof
Polishmigration:local,personal,nationalandglobal.

Akeythemerunningthroughoutthiscollectionistheacknowledge-
mentoftheimportanceofthelocalinmigrationstudies.AnneWhite’spaperex-
ploresthisfrommanydifferentperspectives,fromtheneedtobeinvolvedinlo-
calknowledgenetworks–changingthebincollectionday,forexample,isshown
tobesomethingwhichcancatchrecentmigrantsbysurprise–tothestrong

love,butthesentimentsexpressedbythemigrantswhentheytalkabouthow
