Thereisastrongcommonconvictionthatwomenplayedinsignificantrolein
medievalsocieties.Itisalsobelievedtheyhadnoopportunitytogovern.Thispa-
perhastwoobjectives.First,tobrieflyanalyzethesystemofguardian-government
ofwidowedmotherscarriedoutinthenameoftheirminorsonsinthePolish
lands.Second,toinvestigatethescopeoftheirpowerasprotectorsofminors,
whoremainedtemporarilyunfittotakeoverthegovernmentaftertheirfathers’
death.Thepaperwillrefertooveradozenduchessestosubstantiateafewob-
servationsregardingthistypeofgovernment.
