vol.19),whosetheme,ConstructingaWorldofPeoplewithDisabilities.Diferent
AspectsofReality,ispartoftheextensivestudiesonthedailylivingofpeople
withdisabilities,aswellasonkeyareasofsocialactivityaimedtoimprove
theirlivingconditionsonvariouslevels.Therealworldconsistsofdiferent
aspects,suchasmedicalcare,therapy,rehabilitation,education,andparticipa-
tioninthesphereofsocialaswellasculturallife.
ColinBarnesandGeofMercerhaveposedaquestionwhetherpeoplewith
disabilitiesformadistinctivedisabilityculture,andbywayofprovidingthe
answertheauthorspointedtothedevelopingofapositivesenseofcollective
identityandcommoninterestsasfactorsthatunitethesepeopleandmake
themdistinctfromnondisabledones(Barnes&Mercer,2008,p.121).Key
issuesaddressedinthisvolumearethefollowing:Canwedistinguishbetween
twokindsofreality,oristhereonefordisabledpeopleandtheotherfor
nondisabledones?Canweleadourexistenceintwodiferentworldsthat
permeateeachother?Thenwhatarethoseworldslike?Howisthelatterone
constructed?Intheviewofconstructivistapproachtodisability,thedisability
isconstructedbywayofattributingmeaning.Othertheoriesholditthatthere
wouldbenoconceptofdisability,ifsocietywaslaidondiferentfoundations
(Barnes&Mercer,2008;Smith,2008).
Withtheadventofthehumanisticparadigmoverthelasttwentyyears,
thesociallifeofpeoplewithdisabilitieshaschangedconsiderably.Changes
introducedinthelivingconditionsinfluencedmanyspheresoflife,yeteven
thoughittakestimetosettlethem,somehavealreadybeenmadeefective.
Theycanbeeasilyseenissomeareasoflifeduetotheirconspicuousand
dynamicnature,whereasinotherstheycantakeaslowerandgentlerpace.
