Teconstructionofthecanalisaccompaniedbythecreationofasilting
islandwiththeareaof181ha,ontheplanofanellipsewiththelengthofthe
mainaxesof1932mand1192m.Teislandistobe2-3mhigh.Temate-
rialselectedfromtheVistulaLagoonwillbeusedontheisland.
InanamingcompetitionorganizedbytheMinistryofMaritimeAfairsand
InlandNavigation,thename“EstyjskaIsland”
,derivedfromtheOldPrussian
namefortheVistulaLagoon,won.Forthenametobecomeoficial,itmust
beacceptedandannouncedbytheMinistryofInteriorandAdministration.
Accordingtothecurrentscheduleofthediversionprojectandaccom-
panyingtasks,inthecomingyear2022thefirstsluicegatetrialswilltake
placerelatedtotheflowofvesselsthatwillusethepossibilityofenteringand
leavingtheVistulaLagoon.Tefinalcompletionoftheentireinvestmentis
plannedforthefirsthalfof2023.Tecontractorsforindividualtasksde-
clarethepossibilityoftheirearliercompletion,sothatattheendofthefirst
quarterof2023theentireinvestmentcanbecommissioned.Tiswillbethe
beginningofthefunctioningoftheseaportinElblagwithinthescopeof
thefunctioningofthesluicecrossingontheVistulaSpit,thewaterwaycon-
nectingthecrossingwiththeElblagRivertotheborderoftheseaportinEl-
blag.TustheseaportinElblagwillbeabletoreceivevessels24hoursaday.

TePolishpartoftheVistulaLagoonshouldbeoneofthemainareasof
internationalcooperationforourcountrywithRussia,andspecificallywith
theKaliningradregion.Inthiscontext,itisimportanttorememberthatthe
borderbetweenPolandandRussiaisalsotheborderoftheEuropeanUn-
ion.TisisallthemoreimportantbecausePoland’srecentexperienceofthe
situationonitsborderwithBelarusisveryworrying.Inspiteofthis,polit-
icallyandeconomically,wearenotallowedtodistanceourselvesfromthe
Baltic(theVistulaLagoonisaninternalsea,butneverthelessremainspart
ofit).Commonsense,politicalandeconomicactivityinthisregioncanand
shouldthereforesignificantlystrengthenPoland’sposition.Itwillbeanex-
pressionandexampleofsoundinstinctandindependentandevenpene-
tratingaction.ItisimportanttoofertodeepenBaltictieswiththeinitiative
ofamorefar-reachingformulaformutualrapprochementontheplaneof
commonpolitical,economic,culturalandecologicalinterests.
