tocreateaunionsupposedtoleveloutdilerencesineconomicdevelop-
mentbetweenindividualMemberStates.Henceitismostlyeconomythat
istheobjectofregulationoftheEUlaw,theaimoftheregulationbeing
theattainmentofaduelevelofeconomicintegrationofMemberStates
bycreatingandsupportingmechanismsofpermanenteconomicgrowth
basedontheprinciplesofsustainabilityandfreemovementofcapitaland
workers.MemberStatesareexpectedtocoordinatetheireconomicpoli-
cieswithintheEuropeanUnion,followingtherulessetinthetreatylaw.
RelevantmeasuresaretakenbytheCounciloftheEUtothatend,general
guidelinesofthepoliciesbeingdrawnupbyitinparticular.
Asregardseconomy,theEuropeanUnionhasexclusiveregulatorycom-
petenceinthefollowingareas:customsunion;theestablishingofcompeti-
tionrulesnecessaryforthefunctioningoftheinternalmarket;monetary
policyfortheeuroareacountries;conservationofmarinebiologicalre-
sourcesunderthecommonfisheriespolicy;commoncommercialpolicy.In
theabovementionedareasitissolelytheEUthatisauthorisedtoenactlaw
andadoptlegallybindingacts.EUcountriesareallowedtodosothemselves
onlyifempoweredbytheEUorinordertoimplementtheaforementioned
acts.IntheremainingscopetheEUcompetencesaresharedbytheUnion
withMemberStates,examplesbeing:theinternalmarket;economic,social
andterritorialcohesion;agricultureandfisheries;environment;consumer
protection;transport;trans-Europeannetworks;energy;publichealth.
