INTRODUCTION
Tisbookisaboutreading.Itisusefultorealizethatreadinghasbeenwidelystud-
iedandhasheldtheinterestofvariousdisciplines,suchasphilosophy,psychology,
education,artificialintelligencesandlinguistics(seeKusiak2010b).Treatedasan
abilitywithoutwhichlearnerscannotdeveloptheirlanguagecompetence,ithas
alwaysbeenatthecentreofrstlanguageandforeignlanguageeducation.Within
theeldofappliedlinguistics,readingresearchisalittlemorethanonehundred
yearsold.Tepsycholinguisticperspectivefocusesonthecognitiveprocessesof
thereaderduringthereceptionoftexts;whereasthesocio-culturalviewexam-
inesthesocialfactorsoftextproductionandreception.Literarytheoriesprovide
interestinginsightsintotheroleofauthor,textandreaderintextinterpretation;
whilelinguisticsenhancesunderstandingofhowlanguageanddiscoursecanbe
perceived.Overtheyears,thestudyofreadinghasfocussedonbothfirst(L1)and
foreign/secondlanguage(FL/L2)reading.InitiallyinFL/L2studiesL1constructs
andresearchparadigmswereapplied;however,slowlyithasbecomeclearthatFL/
L2readingshouldbetreatedasaseparatelanguagephenomenon.Cross-linguistic
studies,whichinvestigatetheroleofL1andFL/L2inFL/L2readingandthenature
oftransferbetweenthelanguages,arequiterecent.
Inthiswork,readingisdiscussedandresearchedwithinapsycholinguisticori-
entation.TemainaimofthebookistoexplorereadinginEnglishintheforeign/
secondlanguagecontextasacross-linguisticphenomenonandtopresentthe
resultsofanempiricalstudywhichinvestigatedreadinginPolishastheL1and
EnglishastheFLofPolishlearnersofEnglish.Tebookconsistsofthreeparts.
PartOnepresentsthetheoreticalbackgroundtotheempiricalproject,whichis
describedinPartTree.Terstpartconsistsofvechapters,whichlookatthe
mostessentialcomponentsofreadingcompetence.First,itaddressesthequestion
whetherFL/L2readingisalanguageproblemorareadingproblem(ChapterOne).
Ten,thefollowingarediscussed:lower-levellanguageprocessingrelatedtopho-
nology,wordrecognition,vocabularyknowledgeandsentenceprocessing(Chapter
Two);higher-levellanguageprocessing,whichfocusesondiscourselevelandtext
