WhenJanDługoszsatdowntowritethefirstlinesofhismonumentalAnnales
(AnnalsorChroniclesofthefamousKingdomofPoland)1,hehadjustturned
forty.AcanoninKrakowandlong-timesecretarytoBishopZbigniewOleśnicki
ofKrakow,Długoszwasanexperiencedmaninallmatters-administrative,lit-
eraryanddiplomatic.Hedevotedtherestofhislongandeventfullifetochroni-
clingthehistoryofPolandfromitsbiblicalbeginningstohisowntimes.
TheyearsspentatUniversityofCrakowprovedformativeforDługosz’sin-
tellectualoutlookandopinions,leavinganineffaceabletraceonthemindofthe
futurehistorian.AtthetimetheUniversitywasdominatedbyconciliarinterests
andwasleadingthecampaignagainsttheHussiteheresy2,viewingthe‘Czech
renegades’onaparwiththeEasternOrthodoxCatholics,anditsattitudetowards
theideaofunificationwiththeEasternOrthodoxChurchwaslukewarmatbest.
NewuniversitystudentswereobligedtopledgeloyaltytotheChristianfaithas
theoneandonlytruebeliefatthebeginningoftheirstudies,thusdemonstrating
theirloyaltytotheUniversity’sofficialdenomination.IntermsoftheChurch
reformtheUniversityunifiedtheproponentsofConciliarismanditsattitudeto-
wardstheissueoftherelationshipbetweenthesecularandecclesiasticalpower
waslikewiseveryuncompromising.TherootsofDługosz’slaterirreconcilable
aversiontowardsthe‘heretic’CzechsandRusynsorhisopinionsoftheratioof
secularandecclesiasticalpowermustthereforebesoughtinJan’sstudentyears3.
