1.2.Methodologyandtheteachers’roles
Whilenotalltheteacherstrytoimplementaparticularmethodintheirteach-
ingpractice,somemaydescribetheirteachingintheseterms.Asdifferent
methodsleadtodifferentviewsastowhatthetasksandtherolesofteachers
are,theteacher’sperformanceintheclassroommaybeinfluencedlargelyby
themethodologytheteacherisfollowing.RichardsandRodgers(2001:28)
claimthat“[s]omemethodsaretotallydependentontheteacherasasource
ofknowledgeanddirection;othersseetheteacher’sroleasacatalyst,con-
sultant,guide,andmodelforlearning;stillotherstryto‘teacherproof’the
instructionalsystembylimitingteacherinitiativeandbybuildinginstruction-
alcontentanddirectionintotextsorlessonplans”.Intheiropinionrolesin
methodsareexpressedinthefollowingissues:
a)differentfunctionsteachersadapt,
b)thedegreeofcontroloverlearning,
c)thedegreeofresponsibilityforselectingthecontentofalesson,
d)theinteractionalpatternsinaclassroom(Chachuła2009).
1.3.Teacher-centerdnessvs.learner-centerdness
Learner-centeredteachingcanbeoftenseenasasignificantchallengeforthe
teachers.Ontheonehand,theteachersmayfinditdifficulttoresignfrom
theirrolesasdecision-makersorcontrollers,andmayfeeluneasyabout
transferringresponsibilityontotheirstudents.Equallywell,however,
ateacherwhoisstronglycommittedtofosteringself-directionmayfindthat
thestudentsareresistanttoassuminganindependentroleintheirlearning,
andmaywanttheteachertoplayamoredirectiveorevenamoreauthoritari-
anrolethantheteachermightwishto.Theteacher,therefore,needstogetto
knowandtounderstandthestudents’learninggoals,theirbeliefsaboutlan-
guagelearningandthetypeoflearningstrategiestheyareworkingwith.
Fromtheteacher’spointofviewfindingoutwherethestudentsstand,with
respecttothesepointsisoneofthemainfunctionsoflearnertraining.The
teacherhastogettoknowthestudentsaslanguagelearnersandbythisiniti-
atethesharingofknowledgeandinsightsbetweenhim/herandthelearners.
Sharingtheknowledgeandinsightswillhopefullyleadtothelearners’sub-
sequentinvolvementintheshapingoftheirstudyprogramme.Theexplicit
