Stagesinteacherprofessionalandcareerdevelopment
Asinthecaseofallourlifehistories,progressisseenasaprocesswhichis
“successive,linear,hierarchicalandprogressive,withhigherstagesbeingmore
advancedthanlowerstages”(Mok,2005:56).Tesecharacteristicsoflifechange
asreflectedinprofessionalstagesofdevelopmentwillbehighlyidiosyncratic
bothintermsoftimeperiodsandtransitionsfromonestagetoanother,as
wellasintheindividualteacher)sapproachtothem.Sothecriterionoftime
andinvolvementinteachingintermsofyearsdoesnotnecessarilycorrespond
tothestages,butitisone)sapproachtoteaching,one)sroleinitandthemajor
concernsoftheteacher(andtheirthematicfocus)thatwilldelineatedińerent
phasesofeveryindividualteacher)sdevelopment(Mok,2005:56).
Tetraditionalunderstandingofthestagesofteacherdevelopment,as
expressedinFuller)smodel(1969),usesthecriterionofconcernasthemajor
variablefortransitionfromonestagetoanotherinteachers)professionalgrowth
observedovertheyearsofteaching.Tismodelseesteacherdevelopmentas
athree-stageprocess:
[ł]theselfismostconcernedinthefirststageofsurvival.Teachershave
anxietyabouttheiradequacy,classcontrolandtheevaluativeopinionsof
studentsandcolleagues.Atthesecondstageofmastery,taskisthelargest
concern.Teachersareconcernedabouttheperformanceoftheirteachingtasks
andtheyarethereforeconcernedaboutmanagingofthefeaturesoftheteaching
situationssuchasstudents,time,resources,etc.Atthethirdstage,theimpactof
theirteachinguponstudentsismostconcerned.Teimpactconcernsrelateto
thesocialandlearningneedsofpupils,disciplinemethod,curriculumchoices,
etc.(Mok,2005:55)
TisdescriptioncorrespondstothestudyresultsofMok(2005),where
theteachersampleof402teachersdescribedtheirprofessionallifeinthree
stages:
stageone:from1-5yearsofteaching
stagetwo:from6-10yearsofschoolcareer
stagethree:from11-24yearsintheteachingprofession.
Testatisticalanalysisofthedatashowedthatthereweretenconcerns
theteachersexpressedabouttheirteachingandthattheydińeredfordińerent
stagesoftheircareerdevelopment.
