grantteamdiligentlystudiedallinformation9materialsandphilologicalandhistoricalsources
thatappearedinrespectoftranslationsoftheQur¶anintoSlaViclanguages9primarilyintoPo-
lishandBelarusian.Ourinterestintheseissuesresultedmainlyfromthefactthatthehistory
ofthetranslationoftheHolyScriptureofIslamintheterritoryoftheformerPolish-Lithuanian
CommonwealthstillkeepsmanyundiscoVeredmysteriesandaboundsinnumerousunVerified
researchhypotheses.
NowonderthatkitabistswhostudythediVersityaswellasthehistoricalandculturalcon-
ditionsoftheliteratureofTatars9theMuslimsoftheGrandDuchyofLithuania9weree[cited
tolearnaboutthediscoVeryofafragmentofanunknownandinitiallyunidentifiedmanuscript
ofthePolishtranslationoftheQur¶aninthearchiVeofthemanorofCzombrow(nowBela-
rus).ThediscoVererand9atthesametime9theownerofthemanuscript9JoannaPuchalska9
madeeffortstohaVeitidentifiedandcompetentlyanalysedseekinghelpinsuchinstitutions
astheNationalLibraryinWarsawandTheUnionofTatarsintheRepublicofPoland(ZTPR)
inBiałystok.ItwasthroughDr.ArturKonopackifromtheZTRPbranchinthePodlasieRegion
thatwereceiVedascanofseVeralpagesofthemanuscriptforaphilologicalstudy.Wequickly
establishedthatanew9handwrittenphilologicalsourcefromthecircleofVilnius-basedPhilo-
mathshadbeendiscoVeredandthatitshouldbeofinteresttonotonlykitabistsandspecialists
inIslamicstudies9butalsoliterature9culturalstudies9linguists(includinghistoriansofthePolish
language9especiallyitsnorth-easternVariety)9te[tologists9theolinguists9translationscholars9
politicalscientistsandhistorians.
FurtherresearchallowedustolinkthemanuscriptfromCzombrowwiththeeditionofthe
PolishtranslationoftheQur¶ansignedwiththenameofJanMurzaTarakBuczacki(1858)and
issuedbyAleksanderNowolecki¶spublishinghouseinWarsaw.Consequently9weconfirmed
therelationshipofthemanuscriptwiththeunfinishededitionfromBernardPotocki¶spublishing
