Introduction
ThisdissertationwillexamineJewishDiasporicexperienceinCanadaduringthe
1940sand1950s,throughliteratureoftravelandexplorationandlifewritingas
wellasthroughfictionwritenbyJewishandnon-Jewishwriters.Myprojectwillin-
volveCanadianJewishculturalhistory,closetextualanalysis,comparativestudyand
theoreticalwork,asIexplorediferencesandsimilaritiesintheserepresentations.
HenryKreiselpresentsahorrificpictureoftheJewishsocietyafectedbythe
pogroms,whichcannotfinditsownplaceintheworld.Tatiswhyallofthestories
arerepresentationsofpeoplewhoareinaconstantsearchfortheirownhome,cul-
ture,traditionandfaithallsetagainstavibrantaspectofJewishDiaspora.Teyare
examplesofbothtravelwritingandlifewriting.Hiswritingwasprofoundlybased
onhisownlifeinwhichhismainoccupationbecametheinvestigationofnotions
ofhomeandhomelessness.MiriamWaddingtonalsorepresentsthelifewriting
genre.IncontrasttoKreiselherwritinggivesthereaderaninsightintoherchild-
hood,growingupandadulthood.Troughreadingsofheressayswecannoticethe
notionofculturalhybridity.Livinginbetweenculturesprovokedhertofindherown
tinyspacewhereshefeltfreetobeherselfandexpressherownidentity.Tisprivate
spacegaveheradiferentinsightintothenotionsofherlife,herbackgroundand
helpedhertoacceptandexpresshertripleidentity,asaJewish,RussianandCana-
dianfemalepoet-writer.GwethalynGrahambasedhernovelonherobservationsof
Anti-SemitisminCanadaandEurope.Troughironyshepresentsstrongcriticism
ofracialinequalityinwhichJewishpeoplehavetolive.Tankstodiferentnarrations
thereaderisintroducedtovariouspointsofviewonJewsinCanadaandisableto
makehisownstatementonstereotypingandlabellingthem.Teplotalsoreflects
someoftheelementsoftheauthor’slife,whereinfactshehadarelationshipwith
aPolishJew.WearealsointroducedtothenovelbyAdeleWiseman,inwhichshe
givesarealisticdescriptionofthelifeofaJewish-UkrainianfamilyinWinnipeg.In
herstorywenoticelackofsocialmobilityofthecharactersduetotheirimmigrant
origin.Teirlivesarefullofalienation,exileanddisplacement.Tenovelisaperfect
exampleofhowlifewritingandtravelwritingcometogether.Allofthediasporic
writerstrytocreatetheirownspace,inbetweencultures,wheretheycanbethem-
selvesandbefreetopresenttheirculturalhybridity.
