governmentissupplementingthewatersupplywithdesalinated
water.Ithasbeenhypothesizedthatthelastrechargeeventshadtheir
originsinwaterflowingfromtheRedSeaintotheIndianOceanand
thentakenupbythemonsoonswhichthendepositedprecipitationin
theLiwaregion[Wood2011].Intheirstudy,ElmahdyandMohamed
[2015]claimthatthesourceforgroundwaterinLiwacomesfromthe
OmanMountainsintheeastandtheHegazMountainsinSaudi
Arabia.
TherearetwooilfieldsclosetotheLiwaOasisregion,onejust
southandtheotherjustnorthoftheeasternedgewithanother
approximately20kmfurthernorth.Tothenorth-eastoftheoasis
thereareanothertwooilfields.Theoilfieldtothesouthisveryclose
totheSaudiborderwhichisdisputedandisstillbeingnegotiated
[TheEconomistIntelligenceUnit2007].Thus,populatingthis
regionallowstheUAEtohaveasuperiorclaimtotheterritory.These
andoffshoreoilfieldsaretheprimarysourceofincomeforthe
EmirateofAbuDhabiandforthecountry.
