anewdefinitioninfilmstudiesthatwillapplytoamorepreciselydefinedtypeofanimated
productionandwillbesuitableasatermforclassic,cinematiccartoons,andmoderntv
animation.
Theauthorsbasetheirdefinitionofthewordukreskówka”/cartoononthecommon
featuresofspecificanimatedproductionsandonthestatusofthetermincontemporary
vernacularlanguage.Inordertofindtheaforementionedcommonfeatures,andonthisr
basistodistinguishagroup(fromotheranimatedtraditions),theydecidedtochroniclethe
historyofserialanimation.Theyidentifiedandnamedtwoseparatestagesintheevolution
ofthisform–classic(whichreferstokreskówka/cartoonintheeraofFelixtheCat,Betty
BoopandSillySymphonies)andmodern(whichreferstokreskówkaintelevision–espe-
ciallyafterthepremiereofTheSimpsons–andstreamingservices).
TheauthorsalsostatethatthesepatternsgobeyondHollywood,becausetheproduc-
tionindustrythatcreatesanimatedseriesinothercountrieshasbeenusingsimilarformu-
lasfordecades.Althoughtheauthorsseefutureofthekreskówka/cartooninstreaming
platforms,theyalsocriticizethefactthatthistypeofanimationisstilltreatedunfairlyby
thedistributors.
