ParthiancontroloverArmeniamighthavecompelledMithradatesEupatorto
getintouchwiththeArsacidempire.Itseems,therefore,highlyprobablethat
oneoftheessentialcomponentsinthePontic-Parthianrelations,establishedby
101/102b.C.,wasPonticinterestinreceivingatleastsafetyguaranteesfrom
Parthian-dominatedArmeniaandParthiaherself.
AfterspendingmanyyearsattheParthiancourt,Tigraneswasreleasedby
hissovereignMithradatesIItheGreatandappointedkingofArmenia.13The
year96b.C.forTigranes’saccessioncanbesurmisedbasedonPlutarch,who
describesameetingbetweenTigranesandClaudiusinwinter71/70b.C.:by
thattimeTigraneshadbeenrullingfor25years,thushemusthavebegunhis
